Reviewd: Beady Eye - Flick of the Finger

Following the trend of recent surprise overnight releases, Beady Eye's 'Flick of the Finger' certainly points us in a new direction.

The track is the first glimpse of their forthcoming second album titled 'BE' to surface. So does it support the band's recent bold claims surrounding their forthcoming release? I'd say so. The track opens with a simple drum beat, accompanied by a brass backing building the track up slowly until we are graced by that unmistakable voice. However, where has the bravado that normally accompanies Liam Gallagher and his vocals gone?

I for one am not sure where it has disappeared to, but in this instance I am more than happy that it has been left tucked away somewhere safe, as without it we are graced with a trippy and majestic track that works, almost as if to say, "This is Beady Eye... love it or hate it." If 'Different Gear, Still Speeding' was a flick of the finger aimed at their past, then this is a promising and exciting glimpse at what is to come. Gallagher's new calm approach throughout the track lets this strong riff carry you through the hazey sound of a maturer, rejuvenated sounding Beady Eye.

As usual with Beady Eye, there is an undeniable Oasis nostalgia hanging in the air, but then what did you expect? Is this really a bad thing? No, it works, don't fix it unless it's broke aye Liam.

Flick of the Finger if anything is a reassuring sign that Beady Eye's second instalment 'BE' will be exactly what the band have been claiming to have created with producer Dave Sitek. So for loyal fans and haters alike, stay tuned, clearly there is something unexpectedly exciting about to be presented to the world and this time perhaps with a little less swagger.

BE release date: 10th June 2013.
